The popular Steamworks-Animas Valley Half-Marathon is set for June 20. With the registration capped at 300 runners, be sure to register today at www.active.com. The scenic road race is through the beautiful Animas Valley. Busses take runners to Baker's Bridge, used in the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and who then make their way back to Durango along County Road 250 and finish at the Durango Sports Club. The course is flat to gently rolling, making for a great run in the early morning light of the southwest.
Proceeds from the Half-Marathon benefit the Marc Witkes Memorial Scholarship, which is presented annually to a Four Corners area cross country runner attending Fort Lewis College. Witkes, an avid runner and former president of Durango Motorless Transit, passed away Dec. 10, 2006, less than 300 yards from the finish line at the Tucson Marathon.
