July 2009 Archives

Colorado Ski Country USA just announced that the exclusive Colorado Gold Pass will return for the 2009-10 ski and snowboard season and is now available. The transferable pass, good for unlimited skiing and riding at the organization's 22 member ski resorts across the state, can now be purchased for $2,750.

The Colorado Gold Pass is considered one of the most coveted ski passes in the ski community. Unlike many lift tickets, the Gold Pass does not have any blackout dates, therefore resorts will accept the pass every day of the season. Additionally, Colorado Gold Pass holders enjoy direct-to-lift access at just about every resort, which means skiers and riders are not required to stop by the ticket office. The unique transferability of the pass means that the purchaser can easily share the pass with employees, clients, family and friends.

Railroad enthusiasts and history buffs worldwide are gathering for this year's 11th Annual Railfest that will be taking place on August 13 - 16. Guests will have the opportunity to see rare narrow gauge railroad equipment, tour miniature garden railroads, swap memorabilia, and create new memories as they witness railroad history in the making.

The Durango Railfest is an annual event that celebrates all that goes by rail. Durango is the ideal location to remember the heady days of railroading. After all, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been in continuous operation for over a century. What better place to remember railroading than a place that has never forgotten it? Rare and unique railroad equipment and cars are the stars at the Durango Railfest. The Denver and Rio Grande's Galloping Goose is one rail star not to be missed. An 1875 wood fired locomotive is another example of the equipment that appears at the Railfest. This locomotive makes special excursions on the D&SNGR. This an event for all to enjoy, especially railfans.

Music in the Mountains

Now entering its 23rd season, Music in the Mountains returns this week. Even after presenting a range of world-class compositions for more than two decades, the festival is putting "Pasión" into this year's installment and presenting exciting new programs for both music aficionados and students.

Beginning July 10, Music Director/Conductor Guillermo Figueroa will again be at the podium, and Gregory Hustis returns as the festival's artistic director.

The highly acclaimed violinists, Phillipe Quint and Vadim Gluzman, will be joined this season by conductor and clarinetist Carl Topilow, plus pianists David Korevaar and Ivonne Figueroa, the sister of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa. In addition, guest conductor Arthur Post, the American Brass Quintet, mezzo-soprano Gemma Coma-Alabert, the Texas singer-songwriter duo of Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison, and the renowned Eileen Ivers - Celtic queen of the Irish fiddle - will each take to the stage over the next three weeks.

With such an eclectic array of artists, almost every musical taste and predilection will be accommodated. It is Music in the Mountains' annual gift to the community and "it is the people's festival," according to Susan Lander, executive director.

By spreading out the venues between Durango and Pagosa Springs, from private homes and clubs to concert and recital halls, the festival is available to most everyone in the region. And while Durango Mountain Resort is only one of the many venues, the tent at the base area will be the site for 12 of the 40-plus performances. Despite its size, the 550-person tent provides an intimacy that gives listeners the sense of witnessing a private concert.
